There's been a bit of sickness in this house recently, so a minimal amount of pattern designing and sewing has been happening. To be honest I haven't even missed it as there have been so much going on.
Luckily, before illness struck I started on the next bird in my NZ Native Birds Series. This is the first bird in the series that I haven't seen with my own eyes in the wild. Its a Kokako.
This was another one of those patterns that I felt I needed to test out myself, to ensure that the teeny tiny pieces around the eye and the beak work. Its not quite as crazy as the Morepork pattern, but there are definitely some pretty small pieces in this pattern.
I must admit that these days I find myself looking at fabric in a whole new way. "Is it a bird fabric" "does it have a good feather texture?" "Are the colours suitable for this bird?" Its quite fun to approach fabric choices from a different angle. What have you made recently that has caused you to look at your fabric stash differently?
That takes me to a total of 10 New Zealand Bird patterns designed so far. Two more to go and then I am definitely stopping! I'm thinking maybe a paradise duck next or maybe a Black Stilt or a tomtit- Aaargh! too much choice!
This block hasn't been to the pattern testers, so any volunteers get in quick!

Bugs go away! So many seem to be doing the rounds! Hope you're all much better super soon! Love your Kokako - the fabrics and colours are awesome! I have approached fabric very differently for these birds - colours, textures, solids vs prints, different shades of greys... Its been a bit tricky but definitely fun! What about a wax eye? Love the sound of a tomtit too! x
