I recently bought myself a darning foot for my sewing machine and I've been trying my hand at a bit of free motion quilting.
My first attempts were not too bad, but somehow the tension was wrong.
I initially assumed that it was my fault (bad hand/foot coordination) but I later decided that little fingers must have moved the tension dial on my machine (grrr!) Once I altered the tension dial, everything fell into place. I have now used a marker pen on my machine to mark the correct position so that if wee fingers start fiddling again, I can easily spot it and sort the problem!
Its not perfect yet, but I'm making definite progress and I'm getting excited about the possibilities!
The quilting is over a cute wee paper pieced apple.
Even in this half finished state, I'm seriously loving this and wishing it was for me, but unfortunately I have to give it away... hmmm I wonder if I have enough fabric to make another one for myself... (maybe the Free Motion Quilting will even be a bit less wonky, but I must admit that I think that the wonkiness adds a certain charm, don't you?!)
I've just had a go at free motion sewing this week too. I'm a convert. Your's looks great. Cx
ReplyDeleteoh Juliet, it looks fantastic. Really good work- you definitely have a knack for it and I can't wait to see what more practice brings, keep it up- you are doing great!
ReplyDeleteI think it looks fabulous!!! Definitely something I want to try...
ReplyDeleteWell done on trying FMQ! So glad you sorted out the tension thing! I spent ages mucking about with the tension with no luck, changed to a different brand of thread and no more problems!
ReplyDeleteAnd of course - love the paper piecing! That is very sweet!
Well done you! Love the apple and the quilting! x
ReplyDeleteI love the look of free motion quilting, and yours looks fab!
ReplyDeleteWow, that is awesome for a first attempt! It's quite fun, isn't it?
ReplyDeleteWell done, that is something I have yet to try.
ReplyDeleteI have a new sewing machine too, and (being a wimp about trying new things sometimes) I haven't yet tried out its quilting abilities. I am inspired now, I absolutely love what you've created here. x
