We're off to a 1st birthday party at the weekend and I have a couple of different ideas for presents. The first is this chalk cloth placemat which I made this morning:
In theory, throw in a packet of chalk and a wee cloth and its a great present, but I have a few issues with it:
1. My shoddy sewing. This was my first time using bias binding since a school home economics class when I was aged about 11 and I have to admit that it could've been A LOT neater.

Just look at that dodgy sewing! |
2. (This is the bigger issue) I've done a bit of reading on the subject and oil cloth is not regarded to be food safe due to the possibility of chemical leaching. Now I personally regard a place mat as something that you put a plate on. I accept that the occasional bit of food will escape from the plate and be eaten, but the contact will (hopefully) be minimal and the occurrence not too regular (its a little girl that this is for!). As such, I would say that oil cloth is a good material for this project.
What are your ideas? Is it safe to use in this way?
Stay posted for my other gift ideas...
Challenge #39- (make a chalk cloth placemat)- COMPLETE
It looks great. I've just used bias binding for the first time this week and yours looks way neater than my efforts!
ReplyDeleteIt looks Amazing. A great birthday present. I have been on a hunt for Chalk cloth for a while now and haven't found any in NZ yet. I think this is a gift that will make one little girl very happy.
ReplyDeleteThanks guys!
ReplyDeleteMumma2s, I got this sent over from Australia a while back in combination with some other small things that I was buying. But I have since found it at the following NZ based site... have fun!

This looks good. To be honest I've never used bias tape before so I think you did a great job! Don't be to critical on yourself! Thank you for linking to Sew Woodsy last week! We hope you will join us again tomorrow!
