I need your help... Please

I don't know about you, but sometimes an idea takes seed in the back of my mind and it slowly grows until it reaches the point that I just have to share it.

When I finished designing my New Zealand bird patterns, I had the idea to ask you guys what I should design next. Its not that I'm lacking in inspiration (I've got a couple of exciting patterns in the works), its just that I love the results of other blogging collaborations that I've seen recently.

But I didn't want it to seem as if I am just leaching all of your cool inspiring ideas so here is the deal:

Give me your ideas- what pattern or patterns should I design next? Be as specific as you can, but if you are suggesting an image then please take copyright into account. I'd love to work from original drawings. Animals, birds, objects, geometric designs - I'm willing to give anything a go! But what I am really looking for are fresh exciting ideas. I will not choose ideas that I feel have been done a hundred times before.

You can give me your ideas in the following ways:
  1. Leave a comment on this post
  2. Post your comments or pictures to the Tartankiwi facebook page
  3.  Leave a comment on the relevant picture on instagram
  4. Post your pictures on instagram with the hashtag #tartankiwiinspiration
You have until December 4th to post your ideas.

Once the suggestions have been collected, I will choose the three ideas that I like the most and draft patterns for them.

I will then ask you guys to vote on your favourite pattern and will then make it up the winning design in fabric (as a cushion, a bag or something cool) and send it to the person who suggested it.

A pdf of the completed pattern will be added to my Craftsy store. As usual it will be free for a limited period of time and will then probably have a minimal charge added.  If the winner is a quilter, I will also send them a PDF of the pattern.

I reserve the right to also add the other two top three patterns to my Craftsy store, if this happens, I will also send something nice to the people who suggested them.

Please note that the made up item will NOT be finished before Christmas!

So what are you waiting for?
I can't wait to see what you all suggest!

  1. okay so being that I cannot draw I won't have an image to offer and I'm not familiar with what there are heaps of either..... my ideas are hot air balloon, sailing ship, some kind of maze or tube map style of design, monochromatic rainbow/sea shell design (kind of deco), camera.... that's all I've got! :o) xxx Great idea

  2. For a long time I have wanted to make a wall hanging of an egret or a heron. Most of what I've seen has been applique, but I would rather piece. Since I think your bird patterns are wonderful I believe you would be just the person to design this. By the way, yesterday I finished a table runner that used your robin block and I am thrilled with how it turned out. I added a photo to your flickr group.

  4. As someone who lives on the other side of the world (UK) I'd love to see New Zealand native flowers!!

  5. Ah Gill pipped me to the post, I was thinking native flowers too, I think they would work well with the Birds. Immediately I was thinking Kowhai, my favourite! But of course there are many lovely native plants to do! Flax would be amazing!

  6. I have several ideas:

    1. I have seen a few musical instruments and notes, but I would love to see some early period instruments or some of the lesser known/seen instruments. If you would like a list please let me know.

    2. I would like to see the planets done in paper piece.

    3. I would like to see Cathedrals and other famous landmarks.

    4. How about historical people? Not sure how easy that would be.

    5. How about wild animals?

    6. I like the native flower idea too. I have seen many appliqued flowers of all kinds, but not so many PP and most of those are pretty standard too.

    7. Another idea I had was a series of the Wonders of the Ancient and Modern World.

I guess I should stop here. If any of these ideas interest you and you would like more specifics, please let me know.

  7. Hello! I have a couple ideas that seemed interesting ....

    1. Cactus - different varieties. ( Succulents )
    2. How about organs .... I'm not trying to be gross, but how about the heart, the brain, intestines ... etc
    3. How about different hairstyles! The Mohawk, the Beehive, the Bob, .... etc.

I'm sure whatever you come up with will be a winner! I love everything you do!

  10. How about a rainforest themed collection with lots of bright colours. Frogs, flowers, snakes, bugs, beetles, butterflies.

  11. Thinking about what kinds of things my boys love. Dinosaurs, monster trucks, musical instruments and (much more obscure these days) Lego bionicles. For the dinosaurs, cutesy stuff is all over. Accurate, species specific is something I don't think I've seen.

  12. How about a beach theme...seagull, beach hut, seahorse, sand castle.... love the dinosaur idea too...there should be more boy stuff in the world.

  13. I'd love to see a non-cutesy cat design. All the cat patterns I've seen seem to be of the cutesy chocolate-box kitten variety.
