WIP Wednesday- Birdie Cushion

I seem to be in go slow mode on the blog at the moment. Its not that I haven't been sewing, its just that between my secret pin cushion swap parcel and a few handmade birthday presents, there is not much that I can show you at the moment.

However, there is a little something that I can share. I started this project because I fell in love with this beautiful bluebird block and I wanted to see if my paper piecing skills were up to the challenge.

Block finished, I was really pleased (apart from a few tiny wee details) but had NO IDEA what I was going to do with it. Finally I decided that the options were:

a) turn it into a bag- Nah! Done that before!
b) turn it into a mini quilt- But what would I do with it?
c) Make at least 3 more and turn it into a baby quilt for a very special wee man who has recently been born- A definite option, BUT an awful lot of work and potentially too ambitious for the available timescale.
d) turn it into a cushion- Great idea! It was going to be a present for a friend, but I've decided to keep it for myself instead!

I kept the quilting simple- a few simple parallel lines and tracing the outline of the bird at roughly a 1/4 inch. I don't yet trust my sewing enough to make a feature of this stitching, maybe that will come with time (and a darning and/ or a walking foot).

I have bought some backing fabric for the cushion, but am not sure about it if I'm honest. I thought that I knew exactly what fabric I wanted, but once I put the fabrics together, it just wasn't right (the bird has a cream background, the fabric has a white background). I made a snap decision and bought some of Village in Turquoise by Lecien instead, but now that I've got it home I'm just not sure... what do you think- too cutesie?

Apart from that I've been playing with stars...
a big wonky star that is a bit wonkier than intended:

and a tiny paper pieced star...

I've been gathering supplies for the next stage of the sunshine quilt.

I've been ignoring the aqua and orange sampler quilt. (Time to get back to that beauty I feel!)

I'm joining in with WIP Wednesday today, hop over and see what everyone is working on...

  6. The bird is stunning! You really have done an incredible job. Honestly I think for the backing I'd go with something simplier or more traditional. I adore that fabric but they seem a little out of sync with each other.

  7. Love your birdie! it is simply gorgeous - Anya was looking at them all with me and has requested a pretty birdie like that one please Mummy... We shall just have to wait and see about that! Cushion backing... I suggest a solid matching colour - the few covers I've made have all ended up with solids as I just could not settle on patterned ones... Great stars too! x

  13. Wow what an amazing bird!! I agree the backing fabric is slightly too playful for it. Have you looked at the Robert Kaufman Stitch organic fabircs? Those are similar colours. Happy for you to return the other piece if you need to or swap it out! These things can be hard!

  20. That little bird is truly SPECTACULAR! I am totally in love with it, and it is so inspiring. The bird is so amazing that I'd just do a soft solid or cross weave grey or blue on the back. And the other blocks are beautiful as well!

  23. Hey lady, you are going from strength to strength with your blocking? I think the cute little fabric 'Village in Turquoise' works well, I am thinking something like pom poms or ric rac...just to add a nother dimension. You could have turned it into a panel for a pillow case dress as well.PS I am now following you on pinerest.
